The air inside your home can be polluted with dust particles, pollen, allergens, bacteria, and viruses. Thankfully, a decent air purifier is able to take care of all those nasty little buggers and make the air cleaner and healthier for you to breathe in. Coway is a South-Korean producer of air purifying systems and other related electronic products and is known for delivering a notable design and excellent build quality. The Coway devices also have to reputation to offer a friendly price tag and a silent operation. We’ll take an in-depth look at some of the most popular Coway Air Purifiers in our Buyer’s Guide below, with reviews of our top five picks alongside their respective pros and cons.

How does an air purifier work?

An air purifier cleanses the inner air via a number of different methods such as numerous filters and ionization. The filters attract the air and are able to dispose of any unclean particles. HEPA-filters are even capable of removing even the finest of microbes. Ionization is a process that unloads negatively charged particles into the air, which causes dust to react and precipitate, removing it completely from the equation. In other words, an air purifier can improve the air quality substantially.

The best all-around model: Coway AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier Review

The Coway AP-1512HH is one of the company’s best-selling air purifiers and has proven to be quite popular. With a price tag that generally sits a tad above the two-hundred-dollar mark, the AP-1512HH does pack an impressive number of interesting features. This air purifier is averagely sized with dimensions of 16.8 x 18.3 x 9.6 inch.

One word that comes to mind with the AP-1512HH is power – ideal for smaller and mid-sized rooms. While being housed in a relatively compact enclosure, the air purifier is able to cover up to 361 square feet of air. Its most important feature is the True HEPA-filter with an almost perfect efficiency rating of 99.97%. The pre-filter is washable and the Coway AP-1512HH offers full support for ionization of dust particles. If you’re not a fan of ionization, you can turn off the feature without any issues.

How effective is the AP-1512HH? As detailed above, it’s perfect for use is smaller to mid-sized areas and its usefulness in larger rooms is somewhat limited. The pre-filter that’s washable is there to stop larger objects such as dust clots or strings of hair. The Coway AP-1512HH also uses a carbon filter which can take care of odors in the room, although it does take quite a while before nasty smells are eliminated. Compared to some of the more expensive air purifiers on the market, the AP-1512HH scores very well for its price point and is reflected in a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) of 246 / 240 / 233 for dust, pollen, and smoke, respectively.

Particularly useful is the machine’s auto mode: The Coway AP-1512HH air purifier will automatically detect the quality of the air and adapt its settings to maximize effectiveness. Weighing in at just fifteen pounds, this Coway purifier is definitely a compact model for the amount of power it packs. It’s easy to pick up and place somewhere else: perfect if you want to clean multiple rooms on a regular basis.

Let’s talk about noise production. Coway has made quite a reputation building relatively quiet products, and this air purifier definitely isn’t an exception. The AP-1512HH produces around 58 decibels (A) of noise on the highest setting, which is noticeably less noise than a regular dishwasher makes. How about energy consumption? We’re actually quite surprised to see a maximum rating of 77 watts on maximum settings, which is definitely below average. The air purifier uses a number of ecological techniques to reduce power consumption and it surely shows.

In short, the Coway AP-1512HH is an air purifier that can definitely be recommended. Looking for a compact, ecological, silent, and efficient system to cleanse the air in your environment? This model right here ticks all the right boxes. And a nice little bonus; you can even choose between a black or white color.

Pros: Great price-quality ratio, highly efficient, compact size, silent operation, low power consumption

Cons: Effectiveness is lost when used in larger area’s

Small and unique: Coway AP-0512NH 2-in-1 Air Purifier and White Noise Machine Review

The Coway AP-0512NH is a bit of a special attraction. Not only is this one of the smallest and unobtrusive air purifiers on the market, it also doubles as a white noise/sound therapy machine. Coway is aiming this product for use in bedrooms and is heavily focusing on providing a good night’s sleep: both by providing healthy and clean air and by using sound therapy.

Let’s talk about the AP-0512NH air filtration features first. It’s a remarkably compact unit and is a lot smaller than most other Coway devices with measurements of 13.8 x 14.5 x 8.3 inch and only weighs in at 8.8 pounds. Its maximum rated coverage is 155 square feet – that’s not particularly a lot of space to work with, but should suffice in smaller rooms. The CADR-rating is 110, which is around half of the value that most other Coway air purifiers in this buyer’s guide have. It’ll also prove useful in slightly larger bedrooms, although it’s recommended to get a higher rated air purifier in order to cleanse the entire room. This air purifier doesn’t support ionization and thus purely works via filters.

Just like most other air purifiers made by Coway, the AP-0512NH features a highly-rated True HEPA filter which is able to eliminate almost all hazardous particles in the air. It also features a carbon mechanism to eliminate odors but unfortunately doesn’t come with a washable pre-filter. The Coway AP-0512NH features a lot of nifty features such as a filter change indicator and a timer. In terms of power consumption, it’s not overly efficient with a maximum rating of 55 watts. It is very quiet however and this further emphasizes the use in bedrooms: the AP-0512NH only produces about 48.7 decibels of noise, and that’s on the highest setting.

But as the name of the product implies, this one is much more than ‘just’ an air purifying system. It doubles in the form of built-in sleep therapy with six different sounds: Three relaxing and soothing nature sounds, a couple of lullabies and there’s an option for white noise as well. If you’re having problems sleeping and respond well to sound therapy this hybrid product will be well worth the cost. It’s worth noting however that not everyone responds well to sound therapy for an improved night’s rest, as it does have a gimmick factor. Nonetheless – it’s a unique feature that will be a selling point for many. And we’ll admit – it’s pretty cool too.

Pros: Small and lightweight, extremely silent operation, built-in sleep therapy mode can prove to be beneficial for your sleep

Cons: Not the best air purifier on the market, lacks ionization

A sleek tower model: Coway AP-1216L Review

In terms of functionality, the larger tower-sized Coway AP-1216L shares a lot of similarities with our top overall pick, the AP-1512HH. Total area coverage and filtration quality are very similar: a coverage of 330 square feet and a CADR rating of 235 / 262 / 213. In short, the AP-1216L will most certainly suffice for any small or mid-sized area. The device itself is a bit on the larger side: dimensions are 10.5 x 10.7 x 32.7 inches and it also packs a total weight of just under 14 pounds. The tower design also allows for a higher filtration value of pollen, which might prove useful for those with sensitive allergies. Furthermore, it’s HEPA-rating is excellent.

The AP-1216L is packed with a bunch of features such as a pre-filter that’s washable, ionization and a programmable timer up to twelve hours. The design of the AP-1216L definitely is an eye catcher and this air purifier looks like a pretty piece of furniture that is able to blend in well. The metallic top panel makes for a smooth and streamlined look and feel. And there’s even more: the AP-1216L can double as a light. Speaking of lights – it’s worth noting that the standard LED-lightning of the buttons (which can’t be turned off) are quite bright and obtrusive in dark areas, but that’s a minor nitpick. Sadly, this air purifier does lack an Eco Mode compared to the similarly performing AP-1512HH.

If you’re looking for a sleek, elegant tower model air purifier that can cover a decent amount of living space and don’t mind the somewhat annoying lights, the Coway AP-1216L is absolutely a top contender.

Pros: Great design, powerful filtration, doubles as a light

Cons: Lacks eco-friendly power mode, LEDs under the buttons can be obtrusive

Traditional, small and budget-friendly: Coway AP-0510IH Review

The Coway AP-0510IH can be considered as a smaller sibling of the tower model above. It’s more compact at only 24.5 x 8.6 x 13.8 inches along with a very manageable weight of 7.6 pounds but manages to have an effective clean air delivery rate for areas up to 181 ft².

We’ll admit: the design is more traditional and less streamlined, there are a lot of circular accents involved and the black color might not be overly striking – but the Coway AP-0510IH gets the job done for a lower price tag. Its average CRAD rating is 116 which puts this tower model more in the line of the AP-0512NH in terms of performance. It’s one of the cheapest air purifiers on the market that features a True HEPA filtration system but unfortunately, lacks ionization possibilities. ‘Smart’ features such as automatic adjustment and programming options are available, however.

A small caveat is the same one we’ve mentioned in the other tower model above: the seemingly small LEDs for the buttons can prove to be an annoyance.

Pros: Excellent price point, does the job done for smaller rooms, quite compact

Cons: Less ideal for mid-sized environments, no ionization

The ideal device for middle-sized rooms: Coway AP-1012GH Review

Alright, alright – the exterior of the AP-1012GH can’t exactly be described as exciting and it definitely has the stereotypical look of an air purifier, but its sleek combination of a glossy finish at the top and matte black plastic makes for a nice-looking product.

Spec-wise, we’re looking at a pretty extensive and well-packed model with all the features that are seen in Coway’s more expensive air purifiers. There’s a four-way filtering system if you include the ionizer and the device is able to adjust its settings to the air in your environment automatically. The front also provides plenty of room to elegantly display the air quality indicator. The AP-1012GH pretty much ticks all the boxes you can think of.

What makes this specific air purifier so special, you ask? Quite simple: it’s one of the few available air purifiers which are aimed specifically at mid-sized areas. That is reflected in its decent average CADR rating of 165 and a total coverage of 256 square feet. The price difference with the more powerful Coway air purifiers can be quite small sometimes, and the chances are you’ll get more ‘bang for the buck’ if you pick one of the higher-rated Coway products. But if you’re looking for the middle way in terms of size and performance – the Coway AP-1012GH is the way to go.

Pros: Perfect size for mid-sized rooms, heavy on features

Cons: Price point isn’t always ideal
